Living Like a Rock Star at Playa Escondida

A boutique hotel, Playa Escondida is located in Sayulita, Mexico – a great little town about 40 mins north of Puerto Vallarta, and a popular place among surfers, expats, and travellers looking for a place to get away from their crazy lives. Sayulita is the épitomé of ‘chill‘ – and the place where I laid my head and enjoyed the good life for a night.

As a travel blogger my budget can be tight at times, so when I’m invited to stay with a hotel and try their facilities, I’m usually all for it – especially if I’ve been spending a lot of time in noisy hostels and feeling sleep deprived.

Playa Escondida is tucked away in a secluded jungle-like area outside Sayulita, with a private beach, beach bar, infiniti pool (and jacuzzi) overlooking the ocean, a small restaurant, spa, and features round stone huts with thatched roofs – each one a superb oceanview. Needless to say I was more than thrilled about spending a night at the hotel!

My stay began with a lovely girl from guest services taking me to my incredibly AWESOME room, which like all of the rooms, had a fabulous ocean view. Like, I walked into my room and I could hear, and SEE THE OCEAN from inside my room, from outside on my nice big balcony, and while standing in the shower because the bathroom was outside and had an awesome view too.

As much as I wanted to stay in my room and laying on every surface while listening to the ocean, I didn’t. Instead I opted to check out the rest of the property – which made me want to stay there, for like ever!

    The Beach Bar

The first stop was the beach bar (naturally) where I was introduced to Juan (one of the bartenders), who poured me a couple margaritas, and had me laughing non-stop.

Yeah, the beach bar and private beach did not suck. Nope. Not at all. Once again I wanted to lay on every single surface, but I forced myself to walk away and check out the hotel’s restaurant, infiniti pool, and spa. All of which were equally gorgeous.

The draw of Playa Escondida is the fact that the hotel is secluded, away from the tourists, surfers, and public areas of Sayulita. Cell phones don’t work at the hotel, but there is free wifi for guests. The rooms don’t have phones, or a TV. After all, if you stay with a hotel like Playa Escondida and spend your time watching TV – instead of enjoying the beach, hiking, having a massage, or lounging – then you may as well stay home. Seriously. Hotels like Playa Escondida are meant to instill calmness and serenity. It’s a place where you can feel rejuvenated. Refreshed.

    Beaches, Bars, and Sunsets

After touring the hotel my day was spend walking on the beach, and sitting in the bar watching the sun set, enjoying a Michelada and Camaromes al Agua Chile (shrimp, cucumber, and avocado in a spicy broth), and then walking down a tiny path to the restaurant for a dinner of Lobster Ravioli and Brushcetta. Yeah, I still drool when I think of the food.

As you may have guessed, I LOVED my time at Playa Escondida. The hotel was a great place to relax and refresh – even though the ocean kept me up at night. Yes, it was THAT loud! I can’t complain though as I would have gladly stayed in bed all day, just so I could listen to it.

Disclosure: I’d like to thank Playa Escondida, their amazing staff, and Hoteles Boutique de México for hosting me. If you’re planning a trip to Mexico and enjoy staying in boutique hotels, check out Hoteles Boutique de México for great recommendations throughout the country.
